What Dental Cleanings Are Offered?

Regular Teeth Cleaning

A regular cleaning is recommended for patients who do not have bone loss, periodontal disease, or infection around the teeth. There should be no bleeding, mobility of the teeth, receded areas, or gaps where the spaces around the roots of the teeth are exposed. A regular cleaning, or prophylaxis, removes soft plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth above the gum line, and only slightly below.

A regular cleaning is usually done 2 to 3 times a year, depending on how quickly stains, plaque, and tartar accumulate. It is considered a preventive procedure by your insurance carrier, since regular cleanings will help prevent periodontal disease.

Deep Dental Cleanings

A deep dental cleaning is a procedure done to alleviate the swelling, inflammation, and bleeding due to plaque and tartar build-up along the gum lines and the roots of the teeth. A deep cleaning is a non-invasive and non-surgical procedure. It typically involves deep scaling and root planing. Deep scaling is the process of scraping the plaque below and above the gum lines. Root planing removes tartar and other bacteria that are on the pockets in the gum.

Deep cleaning is typically recommended for individuals that have gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease, or to address periodontal disease, which is a more serious gum infection where inflammation or infection of the gums and surrounding oral tissues occurs.
